I was itching for an adventure.
And this time, I had company.
The N4 took the heavily loaded Land Cruiser to Komatipoort where we booked into a Backpackers.
Not all Backpackers are equal though. I have been to some very nice ones. But this one wasn't so.
It wasn't a very good start to the trip.
At least we had a lovely dinner next to the Koipond at the Ecolux Hotel.
But at least the grime helped us get up early and be at the border post by 4:00. This time of year, the border is open 24/7, so we wanted to get through asap. We had a long push to our destination.
And I wanted to show Marilu some of Maputo.
Still, we waited in line and only got through by 5:30. Marilu basically slept all the way to Maputo. I woke her up in the outskirts to enjoy the sights.
We briefly stopped here and there for a pic, withdrew some money and generally just got into the day.
Now this might be a good time to mention that she is an avid foodie. I help where I am instructed to, but stay out of the way.
Next destination: Pomene!
I forgot to bring plastic storage bins of some sorts, and we tried to find some in Massinga. They had some, but at exorbitant prices, so we did without it.
We stocked up on fruit and veg supplies and diesel, and left the tarmac for the 60km to Pomene. The vegetation changes quickly and makes the scenery all but boring.
The gravel turns to sand, but the road is so much better than 15 years ago!
It was somewhat difficult to buy proper fish from the locals as it seems like they supply to someone.
The compressor had a problem that I tried to bush-fix.
In end, and after I bought a new compressor, I realized that the DC breaker is the actual culprit.
We ended up at Bonito Bay. They had a neat chalet available for us, but I think we could have done better. Marilu wasn't that impressed with the "luxury". She would have camped some more. (My girlfriend is better than yours!) Christmas was noisy, and it was just not our vibe.
We also made use of some restaurant supplied food and beverage.
I knew of a little resort called Lugar do Ceu, hidden away in the North of Macaneta. The camp sites are not Pomene sized, but the facilities are neat and we had a good time. The new years party was noisy as can be expected, but what can you do!
But, at Roughingit, we are not scared of a little rain..
